Bella Italia Weine has all the elements of a restaurant made to feel more like a home: mismatched chairs, vintage mirrors and separate dining rooms. The over 90 mirrors, however, don’t hang from the walls. Collected by the owners at flea markets, they line the ceiling, creating interesting perspectives when you look up.

When redesigning Le Meurice in Paris, Philippe Starck took the hotel’s most iconic patron as his inspiration: Salvador Dalí. When it came time to choose a painter to create a ceiling mural for the hotel’s restaurant, Le Dali, Starck ended up selecting his daughter Ara’s anonymous submission.

When guests enter the Upside-Down Room at the Propeller Island City Lodge, the room seems empty. Look up, however, and there’s a bed along with lamps, a table and chairs cemented on the ceiling. Fortunately, the floorboards open up to reveal more beds and lounge areas for when gravity truly takes over.

Ella Dining Room and Bar set out to give a rustic feel to an otherwise modern environment by mixing long Italian elm tables with smaller ones in the large dining space. The focal point of the restaurant, however, is the 500 sets of old Hungarian window shutters that line the ceiling.

Visit a Buddhist temple in Japan and you’ll be asked to reach into a box and choose an omikuji, a tiny scroll of paper on which a fortune is written. Have dinner in one of the private alcoves at new sushi restaurant Omido, designed by AvroKO, and you’ll find 10,000 omikuji hanging from the ceiling.
